Graduation and Commencement are two different milestones for your student.

Commencement is the ceremony that celebrates the anticipated awarding of your student's degree. In order to attend Commencement, students must first submit a graduation application to the Graduation Office. Once the student's graduation application is approved, the Office of the Provost invites the student via email to register to attend the academic college Commencement ceremony associated with their major. Commencement registration typically BEGINS in early March.

Graduation is the awarding of your student's degree (i.e., official verification that your student has successfully completed all degree requirements), typically 4 to 6 weeks after the end of your student's final semester.

In order to make both occasions celebratory for all, the Office of the Provost encourages families to speak directly with their senior student about their plans and preparations for both Commencement and graduation. Congratulations!
