Families, the following message was sent earlier today to all students, faculty and staff:
Dear Tigers,
As we near the end of our first full, in-person term amid the pandemic, you may be feeling the effects of the many stressors you've been managing. This has been a tough term, and, as always, we in the Division of Student Affairs are here to support you. We encourage you to pay attention to how you are doing and to be intentional in how you take care of your physical, mental and emotional health. When you take care of yourself, you have more energy and ability to show up for the things and people that matter in your life. Self-care is a critical strategy for success. Here are some suggestions to make your health and wellness a priority:
Attend to your physical needs. Physical health will give you the strength you need to support yourself in other ways.
1. Eat nourishing foods.
2. Get regular exercise. There are a variety of options available for students to exercise on campus. Visit the Campus Rec website for information on programs and services, which include open recreation, group fitness classes and personal training. Campus Recreation offers 11 yoga/meditation classes per week. The Campus Recreation center will remain open through Dec 21.
3. Make sure you are getting enough sleep.
Attend to your emotional and mental health needs. Your emotional and mental health enhance your overall wellness and help you accomplish your goals.
1. Take time to unwind and relax, even if just for a brief time in the middle of a busy day.
2. Consider practicing mindfulness to increase your ability to regulate emotions and decrease stress, anxiety and depression. Find some recommended mindfulness apps on the Counseling Center website.
3. Connect with others through TogetherAll, an important resource new to TU this term. It provides you with a 24/7 way to connect with peers on a digital support platform. Register using your TU credentials.
4. Learn more about how to support peers and get specific tips and a plan for your own self-care by using the digital simulation program, Kognito.
i. Using a compatible browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, navigate to the homepage.
ii. Create a new account by selecting “Click Here” above the email and password fields.
iii. Follow the prompts and enter the appropriate enrollment key. (towsonstudent)
iv. Follow the on-screen instructions to access the simulations page.
v. Select the desired simulation tile and click “Launch” to begin.
5. Set up an appointment to use one of the massage chairs or the meditation room in the TU Counseling Center by calling 410-704-2512.
6. Get detailed information and links to resources about a variety of mental health issues at the Counseling Center website.
7. Set up a same-day appointment Monday through Friday at the Counseling Center by calling 410-704-2512 to talk with a professional counselor and collaboratively develop a plan to meet your mental health and wellness needs.
When the Counseling Center is closed, students who need immediate support can call the Center after-hours, during evenings and weekends, at 410-704-2512 to speak with a mental health professional by phone.
Additional emergency and crisis response centers in Towson include:
a. Baltimore County Crisis Response: 410-931-2214
b. Baltimore City Crisis Response: 410-433-5175
For more information about after-hours crisis resources, visit the Counseling Centers crisis resources page.
Lastly, I invite you to join us for two wellness events happening on Tuesday, Dec 14. First, the Career Center is hosting Student Appreciation Day. There will be free snacks, giveaways, open and private study spaces and an opportunity to chat with staff at the new Career Center in the University Union. Also, please join Weekends@TU, the Center for Student Diversity, SGA and Student Success Programs that same day from 1–4 p.m. in the University Union's 3rd Floor for Destress Fest. Come enjoy yoga, sip & paint, karaoke, games, food and more. A great way to take a wellness break during finals week.
Tigers, finish strong and take care of yourself along the way!
Sincerely,
Vernon Hurte, Ph.D.
Vice President, Student Affairs
